Having lived in Oakland for most of her life, Maira ponders the state of current affairs in the city that she still loves and works in.

Hot August

I can't even believe that I haven't written anything here since late January.  This doesn't meant that I haven't written anything elsewhere.  I've been ranting a bit on Twitter whenever the rant takes a hold of me.  Twitter forces you to express yourself n 140 characters or less.  So, ranting seems very focused.  Some people take to having a "twitter storm" which just means that they number their posts in a sequential manner so that you can get more of a commentary.  I haven't done that yet and I am not sure that I will do that.  I feel that if you have that much to say, it may be better to just write it all out on a medium that supports longer expression of character, so to speak.

It's been an eventful year, so far.  The main news item is our president.  I still can't believe that the man got there, but there's no use trying to figure that one out.  It defies all explanation.  What I have been waiting for is a collective realization on the part of the people that elected him to realize the mistake that they have made.  I suppose hope springs eternal.

Many of my friends and acquaintances have taken to not reading, seeing, or hearing the news.  It seems rather painful to subject yourself to the daily comedic show that is our government.  I think that it's dangerous for people not to pay attention.  So, I still read as much as I can from different sources.  Admittedly, it's gotten harder to keep doing this.  It's just that it should be part of your civic duty to keep up with everything.  How else will you be informed when the next election cycle begins--and, you know it will begin again.

In other news, we've seen the resurgence of the reverse discrimination rant by certain white males that are feeling threatened.  The ultimate manifestation of it is contained here.  It's really unfortunate that this has appeared.  But, are we really surprised?  Those of us who are women and/or people of color are not.  There have been various incidents in past history of this appearing.  For instance, who can ever forget the U.C. Berkeley .vs. Bakke case in the late 70s?  I remember that one clearly.  It marked my awareness of how the law can be so blind and twisted by people in power.  This is still the case.  Don't think otherwise.

So, this is how this month has started for me.  It's a month that is generally hot.  It is the last month before many schools start.  It's also the month where we are counting down the days for the end of summer.  Whereas, in Europe, it's the time where people take the entire month off.  Now, that's a concept that we should try to spread over here.  Hmmm...  Capitalism won't like that.

Once day, we will overcome, until then, I like using the words of Rhino the Hamster from the film, Bolt: "Let it begin, let it begin.  Let it begin!!!!!!!"
